One of Spencer's favorite summer drinks is the Caipirinha, a very popular Brazilian drink. It's made with a liquor called Cachaca (pronounced Ka-Shah-Suh), which is like a rustic type of rum. It's made from the fermented juice of sugarcane, as opposed to molasses. When asked what it tastes like, Spencer replied, "It's like stinky rum. Although I wouldn't use that term. It's more oakey and more musky than rum." Mmm, musky. How manly.
Despite the adjectives, this drink is not only a great conversation starter but quite refreshing. Ditch that overused margarita, and give one of these a shot. We do recommend spending some money on Cachaca. Leblon worked really well for us.
Caipirinha
2 oz. Cachaca
Half a lime
2 tsp. sugar (add a little more sugar if you don't like a heavy alcohol taste, per Spencer's suggestion)
Place lime and sugar in a glass, and muddle. Add ice and cachaca, and stir. Enjoy!

I wonder how long this stuff lasts... I brought some cachaca home from Brazil a couple of years ago, but I've never been able to recreate the deliciousness of the caipirinhas I had there. Maybe time to give it another go!
ReplyDeleteOh I bet! I wonder what there secret is. It's like a rum, so I'm guessing it lasts a decent amount of time. Who knows, though. Haha. My friend is Brazilian, and I'm sure she'd tell you that there is no way you can recreate the deliciousness.
Deletehow did you know i would say that?! it takes a brazilians touch to make a real caipirinha like the ones in brazil, but it wouldn't hurt to try! i would suggest crushing the ice a bit and using lots of lime and don't be stingy on the sugar. my mom is an expert caipirinha-maker so i will ask her if she has any other suggestions. also, i think the cachaca should last for a while, but it depends on the quality. google it just to be sure:)))
